Istanbul, conference on the work of Pietro Canonica

The Italian Cultural Institute of Istanbul is organising a Study Day on the work of sculptor Pietro Canonica in the early years of the Republic of Türkiye for 3 November. The Italian Ambassador, Giorgio Marrapodi, the Director of the Institute, Salvatore Schirmo, the Councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Rome, Miguel Gotor, and important Turkish institutional representatives will extend their greetings.

The event, which will be held at Teatro Casa d'Italia, will be attended by Italian and Turkish scholars with the aim of deepening the various aspects of the artist's work with regard to the relations of the time between Italy and Türkiye.

Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica (1869-1959) worked not only in Italy and Türkiye but also in several countries, including Russia, England, Colombia and Argentina. In Türkiye, the three monuments dedicated to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in Ankara (two monuments from 1927) and Izmir (also from 1927) and the Republic Monument (1928) in Taksim Square in Istanbul are famous.
