US Department of Labor awards $3M grant to support safe, inclusive environment for workers in Lesotho

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Labor today announced an award of up to $3 million in grant funding to the International Labor Organization to promote occupational safety and health, and counter worker discrimination and gender-based violence and harassment in Lesotho.

Administered by the Bureau of International Labor Affairs, the project willstrengthen the capacity of government institutions, worker organizations and other stakeholders. It will also support the development of a policy and operational environment that supports workers' rights.

Specifically, the grant will support the ILO's efforts to strengthen collaboration and social dialogue, including collective bargaining. It will also help the organization to enhance monitoring and enforcement to protect victims of workplace safety and health violations and those subjected to discrimination, violence and harassment.

This project is part of the department's Multilateral Partnership for Organizing, Worker Empowerment and Rights or M-POWER, an initiative which seeks to bolster workplace democracy globally by supporting workers' rights and empowerment through program and policy interventions.
