New airlift humanitarian missions in support of the Turkish population

A C-17 Globemaster III Aircraft of the Strategic Airlift Capability which operates at Papa Air Base from Hungary as well as three Romanian Air Forces' aircraft conduct airlift missions to Turkey in support of the population that has been seriously affected by the earthquakes recently produced in the area.

The aircraft airlift a RO-USAR a rescue team, medical personnel, material and search and rescue equipment as well as bare necessity goods.

A C-130 Hercules aircraft already left for Turkey around 9.30, the C-17 Globemaster III Aircraft will take off from the 90th Airlift Base Otopeni around 13.00 and two C-27J Spartan aircraft will take off today.

Journalists willing to be present at the loading of the goods and equipment as well as at the embarkment of the rescue team are expected on Wednesday, February 8, between 11.15 and 11.30, at 90th Airlift Base (1 Zborului Street, Otopeni).

The flight executed with the C-17 Globemaster III Aircraft was requested by the Ministry of National Defence, through the Joint Forces Command, as part of the flight hours quota allocated to Romania, as a member state of the NATO Strategic Airlift Capability.

According to the Decision of the National Committee for Emergency Situations no.4 as of 8 February on the augmentation of the provision of free international assistance to Turkey, Ministry of National Defence, at the request of the Department for Emergency Situations, will also conduct airlift missions for the transportation of the personnel, material and means of equipment provided by other states which offer support to Turkey - under the aegis of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism - but do not own these capabilities.

In 2008, Romania signed the Memorandum of Understating for the establishment of the Strategic Airlift Capability, as founding member, alongside other NATO member and partner states.

Ministry of National Defence has previously requested these airlift flights, with C-17 Globemaster III Aircraft, for the transportation of the medical equipment during the Coronavirus pandemic, as well as of the equipment used for the extinction of the fires produced in the European states.
