Fried Frank Hosts 23rd Annual Michael R. Diehl Civil Rights Forum
Fried Frank proudly hosted its 23rd annual Michael R. Diehl Civil Rights Forum on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. The event entitled "The Anti-Queer Frontier: A conversation on Anti-LGBTQ State Legislation," offered an imperative discussion on the recent wave of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and the potential legal, social and political impacts on the LGBTQ+ rights landscape.
The firm was honored to be joined by guest speakers Omar Gonzalez-Pagan (he/him), Counsel at Lambda Legal; Monroe France (he/him), Senior Associate Vice President for Global Engagement & Inclusive Leadership at New York University; James Esseks, Director of the ACLU Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer & HIV Project; Charlie Arrowood (they/them/theirs), Principal Attorney at Arrowood Law; and moderator Shain Filcher (all pronouns), Executive Director at the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York (LeGaL).
"In recent months, more than 20 states have introduced legislation targeting the rights of LGBTQ+ youth and their families. These bills have once again put the battle for LGBTQ+ rights on the agenda for the country's sociopolitical focus," said David J. Greenwald, chairman of Fried Frank. "The distinguished members of our panel have dedicated their careers to advancing LGBTQ+ rights and protections, and advocating for LGBTQ+ individuals."
The firm established the annual Michael R. Diehl Civil Rights Forum in 2000 to honor the legacy of Michael R. Diehl, a Fried Frank corporate associate known for his dedication to the cause of civil rights for the LGBTQ+ community, who tragically died in a swimming accident in 1999. Presented by the firm's Pride Alliance, the forum invites prominent civic leaders to engage the Fried Frank community in a discussion of current civil rights and social justice issues and concerns.
Fried Frank's Pride Alliance seeks to build upon the firm's longstanding commitment to recruiting and retaining a diverse community and to increase understanding of and involvement in the unique issues facing the LGBTQ+ community. The group participates in several pro bono representation efforts, from groundbreaking family law litigation involving same-sex couples to name-change petitions for transgender clients. It maintains strong relationships with important organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union, National LGBT Bar Association, Lambda Legal, and Immigration Equality.
