Tuberville: No Student Loan Bailouts for Convicted Antisemitic Protestors

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) joined Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) in introducing the No Bailouts for Campus Criminals Act, legislation preventing any pro-Hamas protestor on college campuses convicted of a crime from having their student loans forgiven. The bill comes after widespread, antisemitic protests continue to spread on college campuses across the United States.

"I spent 40 years in education - our college campuses are not daycare facilities," said Senator Tuberville. "You have the right to protest in this country, but you do not have the right to riot, takeover public spaces, or threaten other students. The Supreme Court has already ruled that Biden's student loan scheme is unconstitutional. Taxpayers shouldn't be forced to pay a cent towards other people's loans - and they certainly shouldn't pay the tuitions of these entitled criminals who are wreaking havoc on college campuses. We need law and order and common sense restored in this country."

Joining Sen. Tuberville and Sen. Cotton are Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Katie Britt (R-AL), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Steve Daines (R-MT), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Roger Marshall (R-KS), James Risch (R-ID), Mitt Romney (R-UT), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Tim Scott (R-SC), Thom Tillis (R-NC), J.D. Vance (R-OH), and Roger Wicker (R-MS).

Congressman Brandon Williams (New York-22) is leading companion legislation in the House.

BACKGROUND:

Senator Tuberville believes the antisemitism, riots, and lawlessness we are seeing on college campuses is very disturbing. People have the right to free speech in this country, but they do not have the right to riot or commit crimes. If these students - or paid activists in some cases - are breaking the law, they should go to jail.

The No Bailouts for Campus Criminals Act would:

• Make any individual who is convicted of a state or federal offense in connection with a campus protest ineligible for any federal student loan relief.
