IWU to Offer New Transition to Teaching CBE Elementary Education Graduate Certificate

Apr. 16, 2024

Beginning April 29, 2024, Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) National & Global (N&G) will begin offering a Transition to Teaching Competency-Based Education (CBE) Elementary Education graduate certificate for individuals wishing to become elementary teachers.

Speaking about this program, department chair Dr. Sarah Hamsher stated, "I am excited about this program not only because it required innovation to create, but because it provides an option for licensure for teacher-candidates who have busy lives professionally and personally. This program provides engaging tasks that promote deep learning of knowledge, skills, and dispositions relevant for today's elementary teacher - all of which can be mastered in-between ball practices, music lessons, or parent teacher conferences."

This program has accreditation and approval from HLC, CAEP, and the Indiana Department of Education. Students will be eligible for their Initial Elementary (Grades K-6) educator licensure for the state of Indiana. This eligibility may extend to other states as well, but it is the responsibility of students to determine whether the program will meet necessary requirements in their state of interest.

Students can apply existing knowledge and skills as they advance, allowing their learning experience to be tailored to their specific needs. Students can complete the program at an accelerated pace by demonstrating competency of material based on prior knowledge, letting them focus on the specific areas of needed growth.
