Warwick Cup - the BESA Seaview weekend 2022

Last Friday (May 13), after a lunar eclipse, the Sailing Association gathered in Seaview, Isle of Wight, for the first post-pandemic edition of the Warwick Cup.

Following an intensely social Friday evening at The Old Fort, the nine crews turned out for Saturday racing in what can only be described as idyllic conditions! The Fringe Event (the yacht club deck in the sunshine) also saw an excellent turnout of the non-sailors and crew rotations.

Racing was remarkably tight-packed, and in most races the last boat was not more than 120 seconds behind the first. True sportsmanship was seen across all crews, with The Cheeseparers self-protesting their first-place finish in a race when they realised they had crossed the finish line at the wrong place. The expected shouting about right-of-way at the marks was accompanied by banter!

The glorious sailing weather allowed five races in a single day, with Fullmar taking the Leaders in the Field trophy for their strong performance on the first day. On a points basis, they tied with Warwick Cup winners AM Nomikos, both having a first place in a race, the tie being broken on the basis of the last race.

In third The Cheeseparers, followed by a very tightly-contested pack of SSY, Clarksons and Mitsui respectively - but these had had to battle hard to achieve ranking ahead of Seafort and The Baltic boats who had some very strong finishes including a first. It was a very exciting competition, and a very pleasant fringe event for those sitting it out.

Alas on Sunday, British weather did its thing. The forecast proved slightly optimistic as torrential downpours with lightning meant the weather-gear-clad crews chatted until the committee cancelled racing for the day. Nevertheless, spirits were still high from the exceptionally enjoyable racing of the day before and the very pleasant formal race dinner on the Saturday at Seaview Yacht Club. We are already looking forward to the Finn Trophy in September and Seaview 2023!
