Siemens Healthineers to equip Braunschweig Municipal Hospital’s central laboratory

  • Braunschweig Municipal Hospital to build a highly automated interdisciplinary diagnostics and analysis center by 2025
  • Siemens Healthineers commissioned as general contractor to equip and operate the medical technology
  • Ten-year partnership with a total volume of around 80 million euros

Siemens Healthineers and Braunschweig Municipal Hospital signed a 10-year contract for a new diagnostics and analysis center at the hospital. As general contractor, Siemens Healthineers will supply all the medical technology for a the new, highly automated interdisciplinary center and operate it across manufacturers. The contract is worth around 80 million euros. Siemens Healthineers will involve partner companies in the technical equipment for special laboratory areas.

From mid-2025, the new central laboratory will further improve patient care in the community, accelerate therapy processes and patient recovery, and make service provision more efficient. The order includes the supply of approximately 300 laboratory devices, including the Atellica Solution and the Atellica CI Analyzer for faster turnaround times. In addition to technical management, the contract also provides for the supply of IT infrastructure and consumables. In the future, the highly automated facility will cover many laboratory areas with well over 1,000 different test methods and analysis options - from clinical chemistry, hemostasis, microbiology, molecular diagnostics and transfusion medicine to digital pathology.

"With the construction of the new interdisciplinary diagnostics and analysis center, we are bundling our expertise in the region and making efficient use of specialists and technology," said Dr. Andreas Goepfert, managing director of Städitsches Klinikum Braunschweig gGmbH.

Dr. Raimar Goldschmidt, managing director of skbs.digital GmbH., said: "The cooperation with Siemens Healthineers ensures that the hospital will provide laboratory medical services at the highest technical level - while at the same time operating the equipment by our experienced, highly qualified laboratory staff."

With this partnership, Siemens Healthineers will become the technology partner and operator for the essential technical diagnostics of the Braunschweig hospital in the future - from ultrasound to X-ray and radiation therapy to laboratory diagnostics. In a modern hospital, laboratory diagnostics determine more than 70 percent of therapeutic decisions.

"We are proud and grateful for the trust placed in us," said Dr. Guido Schütte, head of laboratory diagnostics Germany and the Netherlands at Siemens Healthineers. "From our point of view, this project is a prime example of the modern, efficient operational organisation of municipal hospitals. The medical expertise will remain in the hospital, while the equipment will be supported by an experienced industrial partner. This will allow the hospital to concentrate even better on its core competency of patient care."

The new interdisciplinary diagnostics and analysis center in Braunschweig will also be able to provide other interested hospitals in the region with access to state-of-the-art diagnostics, enabling the, personnel and state-of-the-art technology to be used to their full potential. The possibility of cooperation will also become more important in view of the shortage of skilled workers. Hospital Wolfsburg will become a corporate partner and hospital Wolfenbüttel has also signaled its intention to become a customer of the innovative services.
