Minister Tajani meets Germany’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Annalena Baerbock on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Capri

Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, held a bilateral meeting with Germany's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Annalena Baerbock. The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Capri, was an opportunity to strengthen cooperation on priority issues in an international scenario characterised by strong tensions, in line with the spirit of the Action Plan.

The meeting focused on the need to stop the spiral of violence in the Middle East, now exacerbated by Iran's attack on Israel. "Italy, also in its role as G7 Presidency, strongly condemned Iran's attack last Saturday. I personally expressed Italy's solidarity with the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, while also telling him to be prudent and to refrain from any response or retaliation," Tajani said during his conversation with Baerbock, stressing the importance of Israel not taking any action against both Iran and Rafah. The Deputy Prime Minister went on to express his hope for a ceasefire in Gaza, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2728. This is essential to deliver humanitarian aid for the civilian population and to facilitate a broader de-escalation, which also requires the release of all hostages.

The situation in Ukraine, a priority of the Italian G7 Presidency, also played a central role in the talks. Tajani emphasised how Italy and Germany, as G7 countries and founding members of the European Union, could play a crucial role in advancing peace action at all levels. Action that Italy continues to pursue also through political, financial and military support to Kiev, which is "essential to allow Ukraine to sit at the peace table on equal footing".
