HONOLULU - Mayor Rick Blangiardi marked the beginning of World Pride Month by announcing Thursday morning that the Pride Flag will fly outside the Frank F. Fasi Municipal Building for the entire month of June.

This act symbolizes the city's ongoing efforts to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.

"Raising the Pride Flag is a powerful symbol of our city's commitment to embracing diversity and celebrating the LGBTQ+ community," said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. "World Pride Month is an opportunity for us to come together, recognize the accomplishments and challenges of the LGBTQ+ community, and reaffirm our dedication to creating a city where everyone feels safe, respected and valued."

The flagpole that is being used, the tallest on the city's Frank F. Fasi Civic Center grounds, is visible from the highly-trafficked intersection of S. King St., Kapiolani Blvd. and South St.

World Pride Month is celebrated each June to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which was a series of protests by members of the gay community in New York City in 1969.

Honolulu Pride Month is celebrated each October to coincide with National Coming Out Day (Oct. 11) and LGBT History Month.
