Parliament, Saturday, 10 February 2024 - The Ad Hoc Committee on the General Intelligence Laws Amendment Bill today commenced with the KwaZulu-Natal leg of the public hearings at Ncotshane Community Hall in uPhongolo in the Zululand District Municipality where the committee welcomed approximately 125 members of the public.

Inputs from the public expressed support for the recommendations of the High-Level Review Panel Report that found the creation of the State Security Agency was irregular. Members of the public expressed their support for the separation of the foreign and domestic services as well as capacity building for these services to ensure their efficiency.

Further inputs stated that the killing of councillors and traditional leaders exposed the inefficiency of intelligence services in the province in assisting intelligence led initiatives. Other submissions recommended that whistle blowers should receive better protection from the government and be absorbed into the intelligence services as informers to assist with the supply of accurate information that can assist the security cluster. Inputs also included concerns about the vulnerabilities of the community policing forums (CPFs) due to the risks related to their work.

The committee expressed gratitude to the citizens of Zululand District Municipality for their inputs. The committee will tomorrow continue public hearings in the province at Yellowwood Park Civic Hall in Durban.
