City Council Approves Installation of Artistic Crosswalks at Historic Six Points Intersection

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - At today's regularly scheduled business meeting, Corpus Christi City Council approved the installation of four artistic crosswalks at the Six Points intersection.

The Six Points intersection is a historic area established in the early 1900s and has served as a key hub for growth in the city's central area. The intersection joins three major streets: Ayers, Staples, and Alameda.

In April 2021, City contractors began reconstruction of the Six Points intersection, which included new asphalt pavement and utility improvements. The roadway construction portion of the project was completed in November 2021. To celebrate the history and character of the area, District 2 Councilman Ben Molina proposed the installation of artistic crosswalks at existing marked locations along Staples Street and Ayers Street.

An extensive communication and outreach plan was used to gain the input of businesses in the Six Point area. Nine different artistic crosswalk pattern options were submitted to stakeholders in the area. During today's meeting, City staff presented a top choice for implementation.

"I'm excited for the new face of the Six Points area," Councilman Ben Molina said. "I believe the new artistic crosswalks will add character and vibrancy to an area primed for regrowth and redevelopment."

In addition to this project, the Department of Public Works proposed program guidelines to accommodate citizen-initiated requests to install artistic crosswalks or other visual art elements in the public right-of-way. Each installation must be initiated by a sponsor responsible for all costs associated with design, installation, and maintenance. Additional requirements can be reviewed in the program guidelines.
