Sheffield Assay Office Continues Support of The National Market Traders Federation

16 May 2024

Sheffield Assay Office is delighted to continue its membership of the National Market Traders Federation. The trade association began more than 120 years ago and can justly claim to have a proud pedigree when it comes to advocating for its members.

Our Assay Master, Ashley Carson, presented to the members at last year's conference to explain the importance of the Hallmark within the jewellery industry. There are obviously a large number of jewellers across the country selling through the market system. It is important that they all fully understand the rules of retailing, as this covers all sellers. Ashley was able to advise them exactly what is required to ensure that they are compliant and can explain that to their customers. This should also help to raise their perception of the consumer as it demonstrates they are protected and are not at a disadvantage.

The majority of products sold are regulated, however many are unaware of what is required for jewellery products as it can be quite complicated. The office is able to advise any market traders who are already selling jewellery or are looking to enter the market on what's required.

This advice also includes how to use the Dealers Notice which is required to be displayed by law, however often many are unaware. Ashley campaigns tirelessly as part of the British Hallmarking Council to raise awareness across the whole industry to retailers and consumers.

It is great to be part of this membership and for the office to feel that they are able to advise members on a regular basis and become a part of the community.

Ashley attended the 125th Anniversary Conference held in Stratford Upon Avon in April, where he met many traders.

Going forward, he hopes to meet with Joe Harrison, the federation's CEO, soon to discuss further ways to continue support.
