Anchorage Assembly Fails to Approve Funding for Sprung Structure Despite Private Funding Offer

Anchorage, Alaska - Tonight, in a special meeting, the Anchorage Assembly failed to approve funding for the shipping of the Sprung structure to Anchorage, even after a private funder offered to cover construction costs. Despite a thorough one-hour debate, the Assembly cited the absence of a presented funding or operations plan as grounds for their decision. However, last Friday, the operator requested time to present their operations and funding plan, only to be declined by the Assembly.

In the request put forth by the operator, it was made clear that an external private investor is eagerly prepared to provide financial support to construct the navigation center that would be used to shelter up to 400 people. "This glaringly highlights the Assembly's disregard for the well-being of our community and their duty to serve its best interests," said Mayor Bronson. Despite the opportunity for financial backing, the Assembly's decision remained mired in bureaucratic incompetence.

Furthermore, Assembly members cited concerns regarding the safety of the structure to accommodate individuals. It's imperative to emphasize that similar structures have been successfully utilized across Anchorage and even as far as the North Slope. The Assembly's unfounded fears only serve to obstruct progress and exacerbate the homelessness crisis plaguing our city.

Mayor Bronson unequivocally denounces the Assembly's decision and demands an immediate reconsideration of this critical funding. The Sprung structure represents a concrete solution to address homelessness in our community, and its relocation to Anchorage is long overdue. The Assembly must prioritize the needs of our citizens over their own bureaucratic red tape.

Moreover, it is crucial to note that the city currently funds shelters operated by private entities at a significantly higher cost than what the navigation center could be operated for. These options will no longer be available next winter, further highlighting the urgency of approving funding for the shipping of the Sprung structure.
