New National Corporate Sustainability and Sustainability Ac-tion Awards Honor Again Spotlight TIPC’s Success in Promot-ing Sustainable Development

The Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy regularly holds Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards (TCSA) and Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards (TSAA) competitions, with the TCSA widely accepted today as the domestic 'gold standard' for sustainability in business operations. This year, TIPC threw its hat into the ring along with 525 other businesses to compete for award recognition in the 16th TCSA and 3rd TSAA competitions. After close evaluation by a team of 1,281 experts and opinion leaders, TIPC was selected for three prestigious awards, including the ESG Report Gold Award for the Transportation Sector, the Corporate ESG Performance Award for Circular Economy Leadership, and the Bronze TSAA for SDG9 Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. These awards validate TIPC's strong and continuing efforts to make its operations sustainable for all its stakeholders.

In a statement, TIPC Chairman Hsien-yi Lee described his company as an umbrella organization responsible for operating Taiwan's seven international commercial ports. These ports regularly receive over 38,000 vessel calls and clear over 700 million revenue tons of cargo each year. As a key link in the industrial supply chain, TIPC, beyond providing consistent and high-quality services, must keep in close step with global trends and business norms, continually sharpen its business competitiveness, and be a steady, reliable partner to the international shipping sector. TIPC closely follows the latest (2021) GRI Standards published by Global Sustainability Standards Board (GSSB) and directives of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) as well as supports the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria published in 2022 by the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). TIPC regularly uses third-party verification and strives to maintain high levels of trust with both third-party entities and stakeholders through the transparent disclosure of information.

To help systematize its sustainable development efforts, TIPC has created a three-tier sustainable management framework, convened Sustainable Development Steering Committee and Sustainable Development Executive Committee, and established seven regular workgroups tasked with accomplishing goals in the three ESG domains. Most recently, TIPC opened the Sustainable Development Executive Office on July 16th to more-effectively facilitate the long-term promotion of sustainability across its diverse corporate platform.

In a recent major project undertaken to reclaim land and reinforce the coastline along 7th Container Terminal's S1~S3 wharves at Port of Kaohsiung, 31 redundant caissons installed during the 1970s were recovered and reused in land reclamation work, reducing additional fill material required. The project also used a more eco-friendly low-pressure pipe and sheet piling method to construct the new wharf foundations that both reduced material usage and generated 63% fewer carbon emissions than traditional construction methods. In addition, this project was the first domestic example of cylinder caissons (13 in this project) being relocated to a calm-water area and repurposed as part of an eco-friendly submerged breakwater. These and other examples demonstrate how Taiwan's ports are successfully implementing eco-friendly engineering approaches and using recycled and recovered materials to significantly reduce waste management and new materials purchasing expenditures while achieving clear environmental and cyclical economic benefits. It was specifically this Port of Kaohsiung project that earned TIPC this year's Corporate ESG Performance Award for Circular Economy Leadership.

TIPC is also highly responsive to the expectations and needs of its stakeholders. Employee benefits and initiatives help foster the positive work environment at TIPC that recently earned the company a listing on HR Asia's "Best Companies to Work for in Asia" and CommonWealth Parenting Magazine's "Parent-Child Friendly Workplace Award". Our continuously improving port infrastructures and support systems ensure our ability to deliver to clients reliable and high-quality services. In support of national energy policies, TIPC continues to install and improve the specialized facilities necessary to support firms operating in the offshore wind farm sector. The role of the company's ports as staging grounds for offshore wind farm development and support activities was referenced in its 2023 TSAA for SDG9 Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. Also, the overall effectiveness achieved by TIPC in reducing the carbon footprint of its port operations was cited as a key factor in the decision by The Global Logistics & Commerce Council of Taiwan to recognize TIPC with the 2023 ESG Logistics Sustainability Gold Award. These and other honors acknowledge the positive progress and achievements of TIPC in all three ESG domains.

Looking ahead, TIPC will continue to cleave closely to international sustainable development trends and further refine its sustainable development plans to more tightly align TIPC's business practices with the principles and priorities of the World Port Sustainability Program (WPSP) and United Nations' SDGs and to optimize port operations in terms of low-carbon sustainability, stakeholder benefit, and long-term resilience.
