City Hears Storage Container Ordinance

City staff brought forward a potential ordinance to regulate storage container use in the city.

The ordinance limits use in residential areas to prevent the containers from becoming long-term fixtures.

"The ordinance sets parameters to allow the containers to be used for up to six months for storage during construction," said Emeline Hoblick, City Planner. "After that, the ordinance calls for the containers to be removed from the site with the opportunity for one six-month extension."

"The ordinance is written with retroactive language and would impact storage containers currently located in residential zoning," added Hoblick.

While there are still requirements, storage container use in non-residential zoning is less stringent but also subject to setback requirements, presentation, and use.

More specifics with the draft ordinance are available at CityofPierre.org; it will come back to the city commission for consideration and action on April 9.
