Thomas Powles, Professor of Genitourinary Oncology at the Barts Cancer Institute, has been named to the inaugural TIME100 Health, a new annual list of 100 individuals who most influenced global health this year.

TIMES100 Health recognises the impact, innovation, and achievement of the world's most influential individuals in health. Professor Powles, who is also Director of the Barts Cancer Centre at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, has been included for leading a clinical trial for a treatment of advanced bladder cancer. The trial was a huge success - the treatment was shown to double the life expectancy of patients with metastatic bladder cancer.

Professor Powles said:"I'm really proud to appear on the TIME100 Health 2024 list. It's mainly due to a huge team effort from Queen Mary University of London, Barts Hospital, and the global Uro-oncology community - and of course the patients and their families who participated in the research."

This is the second time that Professor Powles has been acknowledged for this ground-breaking contribution to science - in December 2023, he was included in in Nature's global list of 'the ten people who shaped science in 2023'.

The full 2024 TIME100 Health list and related tributes appear in the 13 May issue of TIME, available on Friday 3 May, and at time.com/time100health.
