The University of Jyväskylä's international master's degree programmes, starting in autumn 2025, again attracted a large number of international and domestic applicants. In the first joint application of the spring, JYU had eighteen international master's degree programmes and one bachelor's degree programme from six faculties open for applications.

The application period ended yesterday with in total 5,254 applications, of which 4,793 competes for 372 study places in 18 English-medium master's degree programmes and 461 for 30 study places in the new bachelor's degree programme Business Innovation and Sustainability.

The total number of applicants was 4,200 because one person can apply for several programmes. The total number was halved from the previous year's 8,500 applicants. The development was similar also at other universities. The number of Finnish applicants increased especially because of the new bachelor's degree programme.

"We are very pleased that our new international bachelor's degree programme has attracted so much interest," says Director of Student and Academic Services Mari Ikonen. "The number of applicants decreased at all universities due to the newly adopted application fee. This was predictable and was one of the aims of the application fee. In earlier years we have received plenty of applications that have not been eligible."

The new application fee practice will also reduce the total number of approved applications.

The most popular programme in terms of number of applications was the master's degree programme Artificial Intelligence in the Faculty of Information Technology. The second popular was Development, Education and International Cooperation, a joint programme of the Faculty of Education and Psychology and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The applicants came from 107 different countries and the country with the highest number of applicants was Nigeria with 888 applicants. The number of Finnish applicants was 658.

The degree programmes are available for both Finnish and international applicants. Students from outside the EU and EEA countries are charged a tuition fee. For some of them, the University awards a grant to cover tuition costs.

JYU has more than 1,000 international students every year. Around 250 of them study in international MDPs and the rest in doctoral programmes or as exchange students.
