Reopening of the Japanese market to poultry products from Mato Grosso do Sul state

On October 20, Japan announced the reversal of the suspension measures imposed on the purchase of poultry meat, eggs, and by-products produced in Mato Grosso do Sul state. The suspension had been adopted after the detection of an isolated case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in subsistence poultry in the municipality of Bonito on September 16.

The authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) of Japan once again recognized the stringency of the health controls carried out in Brazil, demonstrated by the swift response to the occasional occurrences of the disease identified in the country since last May, limited only to wild and subsistence poultry. Brazil continues to be one of the few countries to maintain its "free status" from HPAI in commercial poultry farms, following the protocol of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

In 2022, Mato Grosso do Sul exported more than 29,000 tons of poultry meat to Japan, valued at $68.7 million, accounting for about 3% of the total Brazilian trade of this product with Japan, amounting to $945 million. During this period, there were no records of egg or live poultry exports from the state to Japan.

The lifting of the previously imposed temporary suspension by MAFF reflects the effective communication between health authorities and the coordinated efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
