Kiwi Release at Rotoroa Island

Dame Cindy and Dr Davies were joined by Gen Hon David Hurley Mrs Linda Hurley for a very special day on Rotoroa Island yesterday, where they released Cove the 17-day-old Coromandel Brown Kiwi. Rotoroa Island Trust works with Save the Kiwion this bird sanctuary in the Hauraki Gulf, creating a kiwi creche for around 50 young chicks to grow up safely away from introduced predators. When the chicks reach around 1kg, they are moved to their permanent homes around Aotearoa. Ngāti Tai Ki Tāmaki and Ngāti Paoa held a pōwhiri to welcome Cove to the island.
