Republican lies risk hunger – Daily High Five

REPUBLICAN LIES HURT IOWANS : In an effort to downplay the immorality of cutting food assistance, Iowa Republican Sen. President Amy Sinclair said restrictions were necessary because of fraud and abuse. However, there is little to no SNAP fraud in our state, and this bill will only make it more difficult for Iowans to access crucial resources. That's why we need to spread the truth and tell our legislators to stop their baseless attacks.

Click to Tweet: No one should go hungry because of a political agenda. It's time Iowa Republicans stop their attacks against food assistance (HF3) and work to actually help Iowans! progressiowa.actionkit.com/sign/snap-sign-on/

2. WHAT WILL REYNOLDS CUT NEXT?: Gov. Reynolds has proposed a bill to cut and merge Iowa departments, which is concerning to many Iowans who depend on reliable public services. While Reynolds claims this will improve experiences for Iowans, we have to wonder how cutting staff and funding will accomplish that…

3. FOOD PANTRIES LOOKING BARE: As an ongoing contract dispute causes several food pantries in Des Moines to lack core staples, Iowans grow concerned for vulnerable neighbors. With food bank needs breaking records in recent years, and legislators looking to make SNAP more inaccessible, it's crucial a solution be found.

4. AMERICANS DEMAND JUSTICE: Advocates in Iowa are calling for answers and accountability as police have failed to press charges in the murder of Devonna Walker. Iowans are also demanding for police to release body camera footage following the police shooting death of a 16-year-old in Des Moines. As we demand answers in Iowa, we see that reform continues to be necessary nationwide following the murder of Tyre Nichols. It's past time Congress passed legislation to address injustice, including the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

5. RURAL HOSPITALS GIVEN LIFELINE: As many rural hospitals are currently suffering financially, the Biden administration is offering a new lifeline to those that become "rural emergency hospitals". This means that they would focus more on emergency services than inpatient care. As many rural hospitals are at risk of closure, this lifeline of millions of dollars in aid could be crucial to keeping emergency services around in small communities. HF 144 would enable this transition in Iowa, and so we ask that you contact your legislator on this bill.
