D-14 DCU Arrested Suspect with a Loaded Firearm in Brighton

At about 6:58 PM, on Thursday, April 18, 2024, members of the District D-14 (Allston/Brighton) Drug Control Unit arrested Jose Reyes Jr., 38, of Fitchburg, on firearm and drug charges.

Officers were conducting an ongoing drug investigation in the area of 1202 Commonwealth Avenue. Officers observed a male individual standing outside and looking at the inbound traffic, possibly waiting for a vehicle to arrive.

Officers observed a motor vehicle stop in front of the individual, and the front passenger exited. The two individuals engaged in conversation, and were observed handing unknown items to one another. Officers believed that a street level drug transaction had occurred. Officers conducted an inquiry of the vehicle's registration which revealed that it was revoked.

DCU officers requested the assistance for a marked cruiser to conduct a traffic stop. Officers were able to stop the motor vehicle in the area of 300 Summit Avenue. Officers approached the motor vehicle, and advised the occupants of the reason for the stop. Officers requested the occupants to exit the vehicle as it needed to be towed.

After further investigation, officers recovered from inside the vehicle a firearm, one magazine loaded with eight rounds, a second empty magazine, and a box of 42 rounds of 9mm ammunition. The firearm was later determined to be a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield.

Reyes Jr. was placed under arrest and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and distribution of class E. He is expected to be arraigned in Brighton District Court.

The operator of the vehicle was released and would be summonsed to court.
