The pilot had planned to carry out a local flight with a friend. Given the substantial crosswind component in the afternoon, he had an instructor accompany him. They agreed that the pilot would carry out the flight and that the instructor would take the controls when they were established on the approach path to show how to land using the drift correction technique by banking on final.

The pilot, accompanied by the instructor in the front right seat and his friend in the rear seat, took off from runway 11[1]at Cosne-sur-Loire at 18:50. After a local flight, he joined the downwind leg for runway 11. The wind was from the north-north-east of around 10 knots. On final, the pilot set the flaps to the landing configuration and corrected the drift by pointing the aeroplane to the windward side in order to stay on the approach path. The instructor indicated that the aeroplane was a little high on the slope and a little too fast. As agreed, he took the controls at a height he estimated as 300 ft, calling this out to the pilot. The instructor cancelled the aeroplane's ground drift and started a sideslip with the left wing dropped. He believed that the final was stabilized and that the speed was around 65 kt. During the flare, the aeroplane rose and banked to the RH side. The instructor levelled the wings and rejected the landing. The aeroplane did not accelerate. It flew a few metres above the ground and then touched down on the RH side of the runway. The aeroplane ran through the grass and struck a metal fence where it came to rest.

[1]Paved runway measuring 800 m x 19 m.
