Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh Celebrations XL Axiata Network Ready to Face Traffic Surge in Riau Islands

XL Axiata has prepared a larger network capacity. There is a possibility of a spike in traffic during the Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh celebrations which will be higher than last year, considering that the government has lifted the restriction policy related to the pandemic.
Batam, 20 January 2023.PT XL Axiata Tbk (XL Axiata) ensures that networks throughout the Province of Riau Islands (Kepri) are ready to face the possibility of a spike in traffic during the Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh holidays which will take place soon. XL Axiata estimates that there will be a spike in data traffic of around 10% compared to normal days. This increase in traffic is predicted to occur in several cities with the largest concentration of Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh celebrations in Batam and Bintan.

XL Axiata West Region Group Head, Desy Sari Dewi said, "To ensure people's comfort during the Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh celebrations this year, we have made a series of preparations to deal with the increase in traffic that has occurred in the Riau Islands Province. Our network capacity is prepared to double. More traffic increases will occur in data services. Compared to the previous year's celebration, this year's data consumption is predicted to be larger because there are no more restrictions from the government for post-pandemic travel."

Desy added that during the Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh celebrations later, XL Axiata will pay full attention to network quality in a number of residential areas, lodging, places of worship, shopping centres, airports up to ports. More traffic increases will occur in data services, while the potential increase in voice service traffic is around 4%. From the type of service, streaming service traffic is generally predicted to increase by around 13%. In addition, services such as Video Calls, Web Browsing, and Instant Messaging (IM) will also experience an increase because usually at this moment many people will convey their holiday greetings.

The XL Axiata network throughout the Riau Islands Province is supported by a total of around 1,850 BTS including more than 1,050 4G BTS. This number includes base stations on islands, such as the Karimun, Natuna, Lingga, Anambas Islands and several remote islands. Currently several cities/regencies in the Riau Islands region with data service traffic that continue to experience significant increases include Bintan Regency 31%, Karimun 30%, and Batam City 17%.
