The end of the spring semester makes summer the ideal time to address construction needs at the University of Missouri, recently named one of the prettiest campuses in the country by Architectural Digest. Much of Francis Quadrangle will be closed during the coming months to allow crews to work on significant improvement projects including replacing an underground utility tunnel and expanding the walkway north of Jesse Hall.

Construction will begin after spring commencement weekend to minimize disruptions. Signs will guide pedestrians to alternate routes around the area.

Below is a list of major projects and anticipated timelines. Completion dates are subject to change based on weather and other factors.

Significant projects

  • Utility tunnel replacement: Crews will replace the 1880s-era underground tunnel on the south end of Francis Quad, increasing capacity to accommodate the campus' future needs. The project is scheduled to be completed by Nov. 1.
  • Francis Quadrangle improvements: This project includes regrading, new irrigation and complete resodding of the Quad to improve drainage and better accommodate its heavy use. The concrete walkways and plaza area on the south end in front of Jesse Hall will be expanded to create a larger hard surface area for student events and gatherings. Turf work is scheduled to be completed by fall semester, with the new hard surface available Nov 1.
  • Geology steam line replacement: Workers will update and relocate this aging infrastructure from Switzler Hall to the Geological Sciences Building, preparing for future development north of Lafferre Hall. This project is slated to be finished by the fall 2024 semester.
  • Hill Hall exterior repairs: Crews will replace windows, tuckpoint brick, repair flashings and address other external building needs. The project is slated to be finished by Dec. 1.
  • M-I-Z Sculpture installation: This new photo spot will be installed next to the Reynolds Alumni Center on Carnahan Quadrangle.

Other projects with anticipated completion dates this summer
