Rep. Burchett votes for the Fourth Amendment is Not For Sale Act

WASHINGTON, D.C., (April 17, 2024) - Today, U.S. Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) voted in favor of H.R. 4639, the Fourth Amendment Is Not For Sale Act.

"Our government's job is not to snoop around on Americans who hold a certain political view. We've seen this administration's FBI and intelligence community cross the line too many times," said Rep. Burchett. "They shouldn't be allowed to purchase private information without a search warrant and I was glad to vote to protect Americans' Fourth Amendment rights."

The Fourth Amendment Is Not For Sale Act would:

  • Prohibit law enforcement and intelligence agencies from purchasing personal information about customers or subscribers of electronic and remote computing service providers from a third party.
  • Require the government to obtain a court order to force data brokers to disclose data.
  • Repeal the Attorney General's authority to grant immunity to third parties who assist the federal government with surveillance that was not granted a court order.

The bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives 219-199, with one member voting present. The full text of the bill can be found here.
