Cincinnati Children’s Eden Park to open this year as surgery location

Health system adds operating rooms to meet increased demand

Cincinnati Children's has acquired a medical building adjacent to Eden Park that includes three operating rooms, which will help meet a significant increase in demand for pediatric surgical procedures.

Cincinnati Children's Eden Park, located at 2001 Gilbert Ave. in Walnut Hills, is expected to begin scheduling surgical procedures in the second half of 2024. That will improve access for patients who undergo elective procedures that don't require hospitalization, including some orthopedic, plastic, urology, general and ear, nose & throat procedures.

Each year, Cincinnati Children's has over 1.6 million patient encounters, which incudes about 38,000 surgical procedures. In the last year, the number of surgeries performed increased by 8%.

"We are seeing an increase in the number of pediatric patients in our region who are in need of surgical care," said Daniel von Allmen, MD, surgeon in chief and senior vice president for Surgical Services. "In addition, more families from outside our region are traveling here for care since Cincinnati Children's was recognized as the nation's No. 1 pediatric health system by U.S News & World Report in its 2023-24 ranking of Best Children's Hospitals."

Cincinnati Children's Eden Park is part of the health system's plan to add operating rooms to meet this increased demand, von Allmen said. Currently, Cincinnati Children's has 40 operating or surgical procedure rooms, which includes more than two dozen at the main campus in Avondale as well as more than a half-dozen ORs at the Liberty Township campus in Butler County. Cincinnati Children's Eastgate, which is under construction in Clermont County, will include four operating rooms for outpatient surgery.

Each year, patients and families from throughout our region as well as all 50 states and dozens of countries travel to Cincinnati Children's to receive care - including for complex or rare disorders. Recognized as the best pediatric health system in the United States, Cincinnati Children's is also ranked No. 1 in the nation for cancer care, neonatology, urology, diabetes and endocrinology. The health system ranks No. 2 for gastroenterology and GI surgery as well as pulmonology and lung surgery. Cincinnati Children's ranks No. 4 for neurology and neurosurgery and No. 7 for cardiology and heart surgery.

The Cincinnati Children's Eden Park medical building was acquired by the health system for $8.7 million. The location previously was a surgery site for adults, so minor renovations will be made to accommodate pediatric patients before it opens later this year.

The location is across Eden Park Drive from the Baldwin Building and across Gilbert Avenue from the steps that lead to the Cincinnati Art Museum atop Mount Adams.

The seller was represented by brokers Elaine Gillespie and Sloane Nichols of Collier's Cincinnati.
