Connolly Statement on USPS OIG Audit of Richmond Regional Processing and Distribution Center

Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA), Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation, released the following statement after the U.S. Postal Service's Office of Inspector General published its audit report on the Regional Processing and Distribution Center in Richmond:

"This USPS OIG report has revealed Postmaster DeJoy's "Delivering for America Plan," is doing everything but delivering for America. Costs have skyrocketed, delivery service is at its worst in three years, and the USPS is struggling to retain customers. As a result, the USPS has suffered from a volume decline of 175 million mail pieces and a $6.5 billion loss in FY2023. No sustainable business model can raise its prices while so severely lowering its service quality.

Virginia is a warning to the rest of the country. Letters take months to arrive, families' energy is being cut off when checks never make it to the correct address, and time sensitive medical samples are endlessly delayed. Our Commonwealth may be among the first to fall victim to the latest consolidation efforts of this disastrous plan, but if USPS doesn't change course, we won't be the last. That is unacceptable, particularly as Americans continue to vote by mail. The USPS must be vigilant and ensure that all ballots are protected and delivered on time across the country.

I urge Postmaster DeJoy to take heed of this report and reassess his strategy or risk doing real damage to the US Postal Service."
