GU splits doubleheader with St. Joseph's (Brooklyn)

WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University earned its first win of the 2018 season here Thursday afternoon at the GU Softball Complex as the Bison defeated St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) 6-1 in the first game of the non-conference doubleheader. The Bears won the second game 8-6.

Game 1: Gallaudet 6, St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) 1
Senior Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.) led the Bison at the plate going 3-for-4, two runs and two doubles while she pitched a complete game in the circle to earn her first win of the season.

GU scored twice in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead and later plated a run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth.

Junior Jacklyn Zacarias (Montebello, Calif.) had a two-run single in the sixth while senior Genesis Rodriguez (San Antonio, Texas) had two RBI singles in the win.

Barlow pitched the complete game where she allowed one unearned run, one hit, three walks and struck out 11. SJC (1-1) got its first hit of the game in the top of the fifth inning.

Victoria Mahoney (0-1) took the loss as she threw six innings and allowed six runs (two earned) on 10 hits, walked one and struck out six.

Game 2: St. Joseph's 8, Gallaudet 6
In the second game, Gallaudet scored first but watched St. Joseph's score five unanswered runs. The Bison cut the lead to two, 5-3, in the bottom of the fifth but the Bears added three runs in the seventh before GU scored three in the bottom half.

Freshman Hailey Henshaw (Newark, Del.) came through with a two-run double in the fifth and a RBI triple in the seventh to complete her 2-for-3 day, two runs and three RBI.

GU's top of the order collected five of GU's eight hits and knocked in all six runs.

Freshman Hannah Carter (Dayton, Ohio) took the loss in the circle as she allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits, three walks and one strikeout.

St. Joseph's pitcher Madison Erhardt (1-0) went the distance as she allowed six runs (three earned) on eight hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

Gallaudet will head south to Florida for its annual Spring Break trip. The Bison will play six games in three days from March 12-14. The Bison will first go up against Marywood University on Monday, March 12, for two games at 1:30 p.m.
