Council commits to cost of living support for Kensington and Chelsea households in most need

Kensington and Chelsea Council is expected to offer low-income families help with cost-of-living in the upcoming budget after the final approval at Full Council meeting on Wednesday 5 March.

Cost of living support proposals

The Council is committed to create a fairer borough and is proposing a one-off cash payment to residents on low incomes to help with household bills and the cost of essentials, discount on council tax bills for over 13,000 residents and free school meal vouchers for eligible pupils outside term time.

Low-income support payment

The Council is expected to offer around15,000 low-income residents a one-off £50 low-income support payment to help with household bills, food, clothing and travel costs.

Winter fuel payment support

Pensioners living in social housing who are just above the threshold for Pension Credit and narrowly missed out on the winter fuel payments have received a £200 payment last week to help with the cost of heating their homes.

Cllr Elizabeth Campbell, Leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, said:

"The rising cost of living is putting pressure on hard working families in the borough, and we are determined to help those residents who need it the most.

"I'm proud that we offered eligible pensioners in social housing with a £200 payment to help heat their homes, following changes to the winter fuel payment nationally. We are looking at a £750,000 commitment to help residents on low-incomes with the cost-of-living."

The final budget will go to Full Council for approval on Wednesday 5 March 2025. You can see the reports for the meeting on our committee pages.

The budget and Council Tax report will be published soon on the Council's website.
