Smith Statement on the One-Year Anniversary of the End of Unconstitutional Ban on Transgender Military Service

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement celebrating the one-year anniversary of President Biden's Executive Order reversing the previous administration's unconstitutional ban on military service by transgender Americans.

"One year ago, President Biden took action to ensure that thousands of transgender service members could once again serve in the U.S. military - and do so openly and authentically - reversing the previous administration's harmful policy of unconstitutional discrimination against transgender Americans. With this action, the President reaffirmed that service members and their families form the heart and soul of our national security, that investing in human talent is essential to the success of our military, and that inclusion across our ranks regardless of a service member's sex assigned at birth is a source of strength. I will continue to work with the Biden-Harris administration to deliver concrete policies that affirm the dignity and value of transgender Americans."
