President Meloni’s statement on the 209th anniversary of the founding of the Carabinieri Corps

For 209 years, the Carabinieri Corps has been an irreplaceable point of reference for the Italian people. For more than two centuries, this Corps has been 'that thin red-blue line' that unites the nation, making 'a history of both great and small acts of heroism more visible'.

The Government expresses its gratitude to all Carabinieri who, every day, defend our security and our freedom, both in Italy, thanks to over five thousand garrisons, and on peacekeeping missions abroad and in numerous theatres of operation: from Iraq to Kosovo, from Nigeria to Djibouti. Men and women who are passionate about the service they provide and are an example of dedication, professionalism and humanity.

The Government's heartfelt thoughts are with all those who, wearing the glorious Carabinieri uniform, have lost their lives in the line of duty, and have also performed heroic deeds. I particularly wish to remember Deputy Brigadier Salvo D'Acquisto, who, at the age of 22, gave his life to save dozens of innocent people taken hostage by the SS and who by then were sure they would be shot. 23 September will mark 80 years since his sacrifice, a timeless testimony to what it means to be a great Italian and a great Carabiniere.

It is with affection and gratitude that the national community today embraces the Carabinieri Corps, a pride of Italy.

Long live the Carabinieri Corps!

Long live Italy!
