Press Release
Des Moines, Iowa- Monday, February 10, 2025 - Des Moines residents can now place their orders for up to five free tree seedlings to plant on their own property. Each year, Des Moines Forestry - a division of the City's Public Works Department - gives away thousands of trees through its Tiny Trees Giveaway Program.
"We've been holding this event every year for nearly a decade now, and it never fails to disappoint," Des Moines City Forester Shane McQuillan said. "This free program helps residents add trees to their home that will end up benefitting the whole city for years to come!"
The Forestry Division has given away tens of thousands of trees to Des Moines residents since its debut in 2017. As one of the Public Works Department's most popular programs, Tiny Trees helps the Forestry Division promote growth of the City's urban tree canopy by enlisting the help of Des Moines residents.
"Tiny Trees continues to be an effective means of reaching our goal to expand Des Moines' tree canopy," said Public Works Director Jonathan Gano. "Residents can enjoy all the natural and aesthetic benefits that trees provide while helping us create a greener future for our city."
Residents have nine tree species to choose from for 2025:
The Tiny Trees Giveaway will be on Saturday, April 26, at Polk County River Place (2309 Euclid Avenue) from 8 a.m. to noon. Residents can order trees, sign up to volunteer and learn more about the program at DSM.city/TinyTrees.
