Week of free activities to celebrate opening of new Matraville Youth and Cultural Hall

Residents of Matraville and surrounding suburbs are invited to celebrate the opening of the Matraville Youth and Cultural Hall by participating in a week-long series of free community events.

From 8-13 May 2024, Randwick City Council will host an exciting range of workshops, classes and events at the newly rebuilt community facility, delivered by much-loved local businesses and community groups.

"I'm thrilled to invite residents to get acquainted with this wonderful new space, by participating in the diverse range of free and fun events we have planned," said Randwick Mayor, Philipa Veitch.

"There's something for everyone to enjoy, from pilates to a Mother's Day card making session, painting and DJ workshops, mums and bubs yoga classes, and a games carnival for the kids."

The official opening event will be held in the hall on Saturday 11 May from 11.30am, featuring Randwick Mayor Philipa Veitch, a smoking ceremony by Gamay Dancers, and an artist talk with Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay artist Dennis Golding, who - together with Carmen Glynn-Braun of Re-Right Collective - collaborated with Aboriginal students from Matraville Sports High School to produce the building's beautiful entranceway artwork.

Replacing the original Matraville Youth and Cultural Hall, which remained largely unchanged since completed in the late 1950s, the new building - designed by Sam Crawford Architects - features a new multi-purpose hall, covered outdoor area, accessible kitchen and bathroom facilities and landscaped grounds.

The new, sustainable facility is designed to reduce impact on the environment, with fans and large louvre openings providing natural ventilation, rainwater tanks allowing water reuse and solar panels and batteries generating and storing electricity on site. Council also installed an EV charging station for public use on the street outside the hall.

"I'm proud of Randwick City Council's ongoing commitment to providing and maintaining high-quality public spaces for our local community", said Randwick Mayor Philipa Veitch.

"The new Matraville Youth and Cultural Hall upgrade is a terrific example of the City's efforts to ensure our community has access to facilities that meet their needs, and that those facilities are accessible to all and environmentally sustainable."

The full program of activities is available on the Council's website. Bookings are essential.
