Poland elected for UN Economic and Social Council

09.06.2023

In an election held on 8 June 2023 during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, 177 of its Member States chose Poland to join the Economic and Social Council for 2024-2026.

Membership of the Economic and Social Council will be a continuation of intensive engagement in the work of the UN and will contribute to Poland further strengthening its position in the international arena. With the three-year-term in the Council, Poland will complete its recent membership cycle in the three main Councils of the UN (Security Council 2018-2019, Human Rights Council 2020-2022, and Economic and Social Council 2024-2026). The motto and key principle of Polish membership will be "Developing in solidarity".

Poland sees economic and social measures on the UN agenda as essential efforts to achieve global, sustainable development, stability, and the protection of human rights. The needs of developing countries arising from the pursuit of fair development are now at the spotlight of the debate on the future. The experience of uninterrupted economic growth accompanied by measures aimed at social cohesion, successful systemic and economic transition make Poland a reliable partner for developing countries.

Economic and Social Council is one of the main UN General Assembly bodies. Established under the UN Charter in 1945, the Council plays pivotal role in the coordination of the UN's activities for sustainable development based on three pillars: economic, social, and environmental. The Council is composed of 54 members elected for a three-year term. Each year, one third of its composition is elected.

Poland was a member of the Council for the first time in 1948-1953, and for the last one in 2008-2010.
