ALDE Party Bureau statement on the rule of law in Spain

We are deeply concerned about the politicisation of the judiciary in Spain, which jeopardises its independence and the separation of powers.

The Amnesty Law, proposed by the Socialist government and potentially absolving politicians convicted or under investigation for various crimes, is troubling. It is concerning that major judges' associations and judiciary bodies have condemned it for its potential to erode the separation of powers. Additionally, political agreements made by the government only serve to heighten the risks to judicial independence.

It's imperative to respect the independence of the judiciary to safeguard the rule of law in Spain and we call for the withdrawal of the Amnesty Law in alignment with recommendations of the Commission of Venice and other international bodies.

We will continue advocating for the exclusion of extremism and xenophobia from positions of power to mitigate the polarisation and preserve liberal democracy.
