Cadets hoping to build safer communi-teas for older people

Friday, 22 March 2024

Kirklees Police cadets are hoping older people will take time to consider their personal securi-tea when they launch their latest project.

The cadets have used funding from the Mayor's Safer Communities Fund to put together bags containing personal safety items such as purse chains and bells, which together with crime prevention leaflets and a tea bag, will be distributed to approximately 1,000 older residents across the district.

The Safe Tea Project will launch officially on Monday, 25 March with a drop-in event between 1pm and 3pm at the New Mill Working Men's Club in New Mill, Holmfirth, where over 55s can enjoy tea and biscuits and play 'Scam Bingo'. The cadets will also be on hand to offer help and advice about fraud and scams.

PC Sally Baines, volunteer cadet leader, said:

"The Cadets came up with the Safe Tea Project after a session on crime prevention and said they would like to help older people after hearing about some victim case studies.

"We were successful in getting funding for the project from The Mayor's fund, and the Cadets have spent several hours putting the bags together.

"They are really looking forward to getting the Safe Tea bags out across Kirklees and helping as many older people as they can."

West Yorkshire Police's Volunteer Police Cadets scheme is open to 13-17 year olds with an interest in policing and public services.

The scheme is not an entry route into a policing career, but gives young people an opportunity to gain an insight into policing, develop key life skills and support their local community.
