Porsha Key began her career at IDOT in the rotation program in 2011 before becoming a project studies engineer for District 8 in Collinsville in 2015.

Here are some of her thoughts about her job and life outside of IDOT.

Tell me about your current job?

The position I'm in now determines the engineering feasibility and cost-effectiveness of in-house and sometimes contracted work for location and design studies of projects. It requires the preparation of engineering reports that may be accompanied by environmental, bicycle and crash analyses of existing conditions and proposed improvements to obtain design approval.

Occasionally, I work with the public and local municipalities to develop design alternatives while conforming to federal and state policies, procedures and regulations.

Most important impact of your work?

Outside of my position, I've acted on behalf of the department to provide mentorship and recruitment of high school and college STEM candidates.

Favorite part of the job?

Definitely working with the motoring public so the department understands what they want to see in their communities. I also enjoy recruiting, especially at my alma mater, Tennessee State University, where I was recruited by Secretary Omer Osman in 2011.

What prepared you for your current role?

I participated in the Professional Advancement of Civil Engineers program, which I feel contributed heavily to my career development. I also met peers who had the same passion for multimodal transportation.

How do you contribute to your profession and community?

I volunteer frequently, working with IDOT on programs like Upward Bound and other programs that promote interest in STEM.

What do you like to do outside the office?

I love to travel. Italy is my favorite place to go. And I visit family frequently. I love live music and attend concerts every chance I get. I also love fashion.

Anything else you'd like to share?

While in school, I studied abroad. I also double majored in architectural engineering and civil and environmental engineering.
