In Europe last year, energy costs for households nearly doubled compared with 2021. In the U.S., electricity prices were up 14.3%, twice the already historic rate of overall inflation. With prices like these, it's no wonder more and more consumers are transforming their houses into personal power plants.
There's a name for those who produce the energy they consume through renewable sources like solar panels: prosumers, combining "consumer" and "producer". And prosumers are a key part of a new energy landscape that's fundamental to combatting global climate change.
What's behind the home energy prosumer surge?
Traditionally, energy was a one-way street, with electricity flowing from centralized power plants to individual homes. Today, with renewable energy sources proliferating globally, we're seeing a shift toward a bi-directional landscape with energy moving both to and from households. There are many reasons home energy prosumers are increasingly turning to renewable energy. Rising prices are the primary motivator, with 64% of surveyed solar customers citing cost savings as a reason to switch.

Put simply: as blackouts, power disruptions and sanctions grow more frequent, having the ability to produce the energy that you and your family need is crucial.
And beyond better coping with geo-political and health crises, prosumers have a key role to play in the longer-term fight against climate change. Households already contribute 24% of global greenhouse gas emissions - a figure many experts expect may rise - so it is essential we reduce the domestic consumption of fossil fuels as fast as possible yet in an intelligent manner that does not disrupt the grid or expose our critical infrastructure to cybersecurity threats. Prosumers are key to this effort.
