Parliament, Saturday, 8 March 2025 - The Multi-Party Women's Caucus (MPWC) celebrates the International Women's Day, a day dedicated to honouring the contributions, achievements and struggles of women wherever they are.
Committee Chairperson, Ms Lindelwa Dunjwa, said: " As the world marks this important occasion we must renew our commitment to advance gender equality, empowering women, and breaking down the barriers that continue to hinder women's full participation in society.
She added: "We must also, very vigilantly, fight the monster of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). GBVF will not be tolerated, and we will continue the fight to uproot this evil. " This is in line with the theme for this year 'Accelerate Action'.
Ms Dunjwa said the world is reminded of the ongoing need for sustained action to ensure women and girls have access to the same opportunities, resources, and rights as their male counterparts. "While South Africa has made significant strides towards gender equality, we acknowledge that there is still much work to be done. Too many women and girls continue to face violence, discrimination, and socio-economic challenges that limit their potential," she said.
She said the MPWC remains resolute in its mission to ensure that the voices of women are heard in all sectors of society, and particularly in Parliament. "We are committed to creating policies and legislative frameworks that not only GBVF but also support women's economic empowerment, health, education, and political representation.
"We also recognize the resilience of our women who continue to push boundaries, challenge stereotypes, and inspire future generations.
"As we celebrate this day, let us remember that the fight for women's rights and equality is ongoing. It requires the collective efforts of governments, civil society, and individuals. We urge all South Africans to work together to build a society where every woman and girl can live free from fear, with access to the tools she needs to thrive, emphasised Ms Dunjwa.
