What “transformation” really means for CBC/Radio-Canada

An article published in La Presse today talks about a transformation project currently in development at CBC/Radio-Canada. At their June meeting, senior management and the Board of Directors discussed the declining media environment in Canada and the growing pressures the public broadcaster is facing. In response, the Board suggested that management explore options to find a sustainable future for the public broadcaster, an exercise that all media companies are considering.

Senior management is working with a team including representatives from across the Corporation on a long-term modernization plan that aims to ensure the sustainability of the public broadcaster in the face of current challenges in the media industry. This project aims to secure the digital future of CBC/Radio-Canada and make the most of our limited resources, particularly in terms of technology. It does not aim to eliminate the editorial and programming independence of our English or French media services.

Since its creation, Radio-Canada has played an essential role among Francophones across the country and that will not change. Radio-Canada remains the essential link for all francophones in the country, just as CBC is for anglophones.

The weakening of local media and the growing appeal of digital giants to Canadians, particularly younger generations, pose new challenges and we are ready to take them on.

CBC and Radio-Canada share resources to ensure the responsible management of the funds allocated to us and we already do this effectively. At the same time, we serve markets that have distinct realities and cultures, and that require specific strategies. The transformation project we are working on will always respect this essential priority of our company.

We are aware of our responsibilities. We will always respect the DNA of CBC/Radio-Canada, namely a strong public media in both official languages, dedicated to serving all Canadians.
