LIMA, Ohio (Thursday, March 28, 2024) - The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) invites the public to a meeting to receive input on improvements to address safety issues at the intersection of State Route 117 and State Route 501 (Wapak Road) located southwest of the city of Lima, in Shawnee Township, Allen County.

The meeting is set to take place on Tuesday, April 23 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Gardendale Church of God, located at 4130 Spencerville Road. The meeting will begin with a short presentation followed by an open house period during which the project team and exhibits will be available.

The project proposes to improve safety and congestion by constructing a single-lane roundabout at the intersection. Four roundabout layout alternatives have been developed. A preferred roundabout design has not yet been selected. ODOT is seeking public feedback prior to advancing an alternative into detailed design.

The project is tentatively scheduled to begin construction in the summer of 2026.

A 2013 safety study analyzed crash data from 2010-2012 to identify crash patterns and appropriate countermeasures to improve safety at the intersection. A project was completed in 2016 which modified the alignment of the intersection, added left-turn lanes on SR 117, and installed intersection lighting. Crashes, however, continued to occur.

An additional safety study conducted in 2022 determined that while the intersection improvements reduced the crash patterns that were problematic prior to 2016, a new crash pattern for the intersection emerged that included more far-side angle crashes and a greater number of severe crashes.

Currently, environmental studies are ongoing. Impacts to wetlands and removal of some trees may occur.
