Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sports

Bern, 23.05.2024 - At the invitation of President Viola Amherd, members of the diplomatic corps will visit the Pierre Gianadda Foundation in Martigny and the Olympic Museum in Lausanne on Friday, 24 May. This year's programme showcases Switzerland's international political, economic and cultural ties, and reflects the spirit of peaceful interaction and competition in this Olympic year.

At the Gianadda Foundation, the foreign diplomats will be able to view the remains of a Gallo-Roman temple that were discovered during the construction of the building in the 1970s. The temple was dedicated to Mercury, the ancient god of trade, travel and communication. The region of Martigny has been an important transportation crossroads since ancient times.

The diplomats will then travel to Lausanne, where they will visit the Olympic Museum. The visit will focus on the Olympic values of 'excellence, friendship and respect' and thus the peaceful competition between nations. Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), will attend this part of the programme. The annual excursion is a fixture in the diplomatic calendar and is attended by the foreign ambassadors accredited to and resident in Switzerland.
