Kentucky American Water Refurbishing Tanks in Bourbon County

As part of its ongoing water system renewal efforts, Kentucky American Water is wrapping up the rehabilitation of one water storage tank in rural Bourbon County and preparing to begin work on another in Millersburg, for a total investment of approximately $1.6 million.

Crews are completing the rehabilitation of the company's 750,000-gallon water storage tank on Briar Hill Road and plan to begin work on a 200,000-gallon tank in Millersburg this summer. Kentucky American Water's tank rehabilitation program of inspecting, sand blasting, and repainting tanks extends the tanks' service lives and helps protect water quality.

To rehabilitate tanks, any water in the tank is drained and crews then sand blast the inside and outside of the tank. Crews thoroughly inspect the tank to determine if anything needs to be replaced ̶ such as structural supports, ladders, gaskets or other features ̶ due to age or changes in industry requirements. Crews then complete a series of steps to paint the tank inside and out. The painting process includes applying a new coating that serves as a protective barrier and prevents the steel from rusting and impacting the quality of the water inside the tanks. The last step is thoroughly disinfecting the tank before refilling it with drinking water.

Kentucky American Water owns and operates 26 water storage tanks throughout its service area. Tanks undergo inspections every five years with more extensive refurbishment conducted every 15 to 20 years.
