Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of UNCTAD, Will Give XVII Raúl Prebisch Lecture at ECLAC

The prominent Costa Rican economist will make a presentation at the United Nations organization's headquarters in Santiago, Chile on Monday, October 30.

Prominent economist Rebeca Grynspan, the Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), will give the XVII Raúl Prebisch Lecture on Monday, October 30, 2023 at the main headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), where she will be received by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, the regional organization's Executive Secretary.

The former Vice President of Costa Rica will give a lecture entitled "Globalization disrupted: Prebisch, Trade Imbalances, and the Future of International Economics" at 11:00 a.m. local time in Chile (UTC/GMT -3:00).

Rebeca Grynspan is the first woman to hold the position of Secretary-General of UNCTAD. Prior to her appointment, she was the Secretary-General of the Ibero-American Conference, having been the first woman to lead that organization as well.

In 2010, she was named Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Associate Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Between 2006 and 2010, she served as the UNDP's Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Prior to joining the UN, she served as Vice President of Costa Rica (1994-1998). She also held the positions of Minister of Housing, Minister Coordinator of Economic and Social Affairs, and Deputy Finance Minister.

In addition, she was a member of the High-level Panel on Financing for Development convened by then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2001.

Grynspan holds a degree in Economics from the University of Costa Rica and a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Sussex. She was awarded a Doctorate honoris causa each by the University of Salamanca, the University of Extremadura and the European University of Madrid.

Her areas of interest and research include the reduction of inequality and poverty, gender equality, and South-South cooperation as a tool for development and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), among others.
