Plan Your Perfect Summer: Parks and Recreation Activities Guide Unveiled + Summer Employment Openings

Press Release

Des Moines, Iowa- Friday, April 4, 2024 - Spring has officially sprung, and Des Moines Parks and Recreation welcomes the season of sun and fun with an abundance of activities and employment opportunities for residents and visitors alike!

The newly launched digital Spring/Summer Activities Guide is now live, and registrations are now open, offering a plethora of options for individuals of all ages. From youth and adult sports leagues to environmental education initiatives, swim lessons, and aquatic fitness sessions, the guide showcases a diverse range of programs. Additionally, residents can look forward to special events and tailored programming at the city's dog parks and cemeteries.

"We've meticulously crafted an array of programs to cater to our community's varied interests. With our commitment to providing safe and enjoyable experiences, we're excited to kick off these warmer months," remarked Ben Page, Director of Parks and Recreation.

Given the popularity of certain programs like swim and tennis lessons, early registration is encouraged to secure a spot.

"Our swim lessons have seen tremendous demand, serving nearly 4,000 kids last year. As we gear up for another bustling aquatic season, we're actively recruiting additional staff to meet the needs of our community," noted Ian Knutsen, Recreation Supervisor.

Prospective employees seeking a fulfilling and enjoyable summer job are encouraged to apply online. Those interested in signing up for activities can create an account on the Parks and Recreation Department's registration system via dmparks.org. Parents are advised to set up their accounts first and then add their children accordingly.

To promote inclusivity, scholarships offering $5 registration fees for athletic programs and swim lessons are available through partnerships with Des Moines Public Schools and the State of Iowa. Eligibility details can be found on the Des Moines Parks and Recreation website under the GRASP and YRSP scholarship programs.
