San Antonio (August 9, 2022) - San Antonio welcomed a routine special training exercise with members of the U.S. Army last night in downtown San Antonio. The training will continue through Friday, August 12th.Training has consisted of air and ground mobility operations and close-quarter combat training to enhance Army soldiers' skills by operating in a realistic environment. This training will not have direct contact with the community; however, residents may continue to see or hear low-flying helicopters, simulated gunfire, and controlled explosions throughout the evenings this week from about 6 p.m. to 3 a.m.

The City's 311 and 911 call centers did not receive any calls or emails last night or this morning about the training. SAPD provided security at and around the Alamodome area. No incidents were reported last night related to the training.

The City received the following this morning from the U.S. Army Public Affairs Office:

"The U.S. Army training event last night in the Alamodome offered excellent opportunities for air- and ground-mobility coordination, close-quarter battle training and working in unfamiliar environments. This real-world training is a critical portion of maintaining readiness.

The support and assistance of the SAPD was critical to a successful event and allowed for an excellent experience."

As part of the City's commitment to supporting the armed forces, the City has partnered with the military to allow off-base training several times over the years. The military is an integral part of the City's local economy and provides resources and support through major events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and Winter Storm Uri.

OUTREACH TO THE COMMUNITY

SAPD officers have visited door-to-door in the immediate areas to notify residents and businesses about the training taking place this week. SAPD also sent text messages informing the community about the upcoming training. Sign-up for SAPD community notifications by texting "SAPD" to 39987.

Text messages included the following:

The U.S. Army will be conducting training in designated locations in your zip code from August 8-12 each night from about 6PM to 3AM. The training will not have direct contact with you; however, you may see or hear low-flying helicopters, simulated gunfire, and controlled explosions. This is just training. SAPD is aware of the training and has uniformed officers onsite to ensure the safety of residents and participants. Both the US Army & SAPD appreciate your understanding and apologize for any disturbances.

San Antonio is grateful to be known as Military City and will continue to strengthen our partnerships and provide support to the Military. All exercises are conducted safely and courteously while providing the best possible training available for our nation's Army.
