Explaining multilateralism in action

For the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, observedevery year on 24 April, the European External Action Service launched a social media campaign to explain why #MultilateralismMatters.

What do Geneva, New York, Paris, Rome, Strasbourg, Vienna and Addis Ababa have in common? They are hubs for multilateralism. On #MultilateralismDay we put the spotlight on our trainees to explain the work of the UN and its agencies, and how the European Union works cooperates closelywith these organisations for a common aim: a better future for all.

Multilateralism is under increasing strain and in need of urgent reform. But effective multilateralism is precisely what we need today, more than ever. | EU High Representative Josep Borrell

That is what the United Nations, the EU and other international organisations are all about: working through disagreements, finding common ground, and making progress together. There is no other way for countries or regions to tackle borderless challenges, such as the climate crisis, the global food security crisis, or global pandemics.

The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace is an important reminder that we can only create a better and fairer future for everyone by working together.

EU traineesand #OurVoiceOurFuture championsfrom around the world have therefore used the opportunity of #MultilateralismDay to explain in their own words why multilateral action matters.

In addition, #OurVoiceOurFuture champions Francisco and Jessica explain what multilateralism actually means: a giant puzzle, where each country and community is a crucial piece. Multilateralism is the magic glue that brings the pieces together, creating a strong and united world!
