MATSUI STATEMENT ON BIDEN ADMINISTRATION’S NEW TAILPIPE EMISSION STANDARDS FOR HEAVY-DUTY VEHICLES

SACRAMENTO, CA- Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-07) released the following statement in response to the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) finalization of new tailpipe emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles, model years 2027 and beyond.

Heavy-duty vehicles, including tractor trailers, garbage trucks, box trucks, delivery vans, and buses, are responsible for 23% of all greenhouse gas pollution in the transportation sector, as well as 59% of nitric oxide (NOx) pollution and 55% of particulate matter pollution. Moreover, the impacts of this pollution fall disproportionately on disadvantaged communities. Congresswoman Matsui has worked tirelessly to curb these emissions, calling on the EPA to implement new, stronger emissions standards for heavy-duty vehicles. In March of 2023, the Congresswoman led 58 lawmakers in urging EPA to issue and swiftly finalize a new emissions rule for light- and heavy-duty vehicles. In September of 2023, after EPA proposed a new rule for heavy-duty vehicles, the Congresswoman again led 81 colleagues in urging EPA to swiftly finalize a strong rule.

"This new emissions rule for heavy-duty vehicles will accelerate the transition to zero-emission trucks, reducing pollution in overburdened communities and helping to ensure a safe, livable world for our children," said Congresswoman Matsui. "Here in California, we are already seeing the catastrophic impacts of climate change, and these impacts will only get worse if we don't rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector. I have long advocated for stronger emissions rules for heavy trucks and buses, and I commend the President and his Administration for taking aggressive action to reduce pollution from heavy-duty vehicles."
