Water Utility Crews Conducting Service Line Inventory

Beginning May 6, Denton Water Utilities will deploy crews across the city to conduct visual inspections of service lines used to deliver water from water mains to homes and businesses. This inventory is part of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Lead & Copper Rule revisions, aimed at strengthening drinking water requirements to find and eliminate sources of lead.

Denton's water has always exceeded water quality requirements, and any water that leaves the City's treatment plants do not contain any lead. The risk for lead comes from corrosion of service lines and plumbing materials made with lead. The goal of the EPA's revisions is to identify these sources (both public and private) and establish a plan to eliminate all sources in the water supply system.

As part of this federal mandate, Denton is required to build an inventory of both utility and customer service lines using construction and repair records. A complete inventory will be submitted to the EPA in October 2024, with the City subsequently adopting a comprehensive replacement plan. The City will notify customers who are found to have lead service lines or lines where the material status is unknown. Lead was not allowed to be used in construction in Texas after 1989, so crews will be targeting the lines installed prior to that date. Additionally, the City will maintain this inventory in a format that is accessible by customers.
